If you’ve ever heard of Metamucil, that’s just psyllium husk in a powder form and it’s not just for old people. Adding some of this to your daily routine has a ton of benefits. I tried to write a few sentences explaining the benefits but they all turn out like shit.

- there’s soluble and insoluble fibre. you need both, and psyllium only has soluble fibre so it’s part of a larger fibre intake (carrots are pretty okay sources of insoluble fibre - snacking carrots, perhaps with hummus is great!)
- peanut butter also has surprisingly decent fibre in it: honestly insoluble fibre is everywhere
- if you plan on adding psyllium (or any fibre) to your diet, build up slowly! it can cause literally constant diarrhoea for weeks or more if you just whack 30g/day (RDI) straight into your diet all at once
- add some to pancake batter! you’ll want to add about 10-20% more liquid because it gels up, but it’s real easy to add and is basically unnoticeable
It comes with age but age comes at different times for different people. If you find yourself thinking that bowel movements aren’t as easy as they ought to be it’s time. And yeah the main benefit is it gets easier to engage in the disgusting reality of biology.
IDK why anyone says this gives them the shits. Too much fiber slows things down. I take this stuff once a day and it just makes for less wiping and more cohesive shits. A minor improvement with no negative side effects.

I believe it though. Researchers out there have shown that even things like time of day can make a HUGE difference in the measurable results of different remedies and medicines. It’s inconvenient as shit for those of us who would like to wake up, chug a handful of pills, and get on with our day.

Humans evolved consuming a high fiber diet, but the standard American diet of highly processed foods has little fiber. Came here to mention inulin as a great fiber supplement in addition to psyllium husk. Fixing my gut changed my life, the direct impacts for me on mood, well-being, inflammation, and overall health cannot be overstated.
Does inulin give you bad bloating and flatulence or is it only me? Half a teaspoon will do that to me. Although, the benefits of improved movement outweigh the negatives.
That happened for me at first, so I reduced the amount. Now I mix it into my homemade bread and don’t notice it at all!

Costco sells a powder with stevia instead of sugar that’s pretty good. Two rounded (whatever that means!) teaspoons in the morning and two before dinner for me has been fantastic. The Kirkland brand is also half the cost of the Metamucil, as well as like half the dose. So that’s a quarter the price. It sells itself.

Sorry to rain on your parade but psyllium plants soak up lead, and ConsumerLabs tested different brands and they all had significant lead, and like half of them had more lead than California’s suggested maximum. No way to avoid it. I switched to Citrucel or something generic that doesn’t have that problem.
You know what’s good at removing lead from the body? Fiber. Real catch 22 here, drink more fiber, get more lead, drink more fiber, remove more lead.
And just to have a non-jokey answer, if it’s grown outdoors, it’s probably got lead in it. Prop 65 labels are on everything, making it the Boy Who Cried Wolf of safety labels at this point.

There are a number of studies that talk about fiver intake, it’s relationship with consumed lead, and how that helps those conditions, like this one, which talks about the gut biome and how fiber helps you excrete lead. None of them are specifically saying “eat fiber poop lead,” but they say “eating fiber and pooping lead” fixes X, Y, Z. I’m too lazy to do Z, I’m on my phone.
I just thought about it one night, and it kind of just felt logical. Fiber says don’t take it within X time of consuming medication, because it can affect the uptake, and I was like, hmm, it’s gotta be more than just medication uptake, it’s probably anything uptake. I’m not sure if it’s anything, per se, but I think you get what I mean.

That’s a good point, but unfortunately I’ve never seen any evidence that your body does or does not absorb the lead from psyllium fiber, or if the fiber maybe even absorbs more lead from your body on the way through. All I know is that psyllium fiber has lead in it, and that there are other sources of fiber that don’t.
I just eat a whole grains (brown rice, not white. 100% whole wheat etc) and plenty of fruits and vegetables that naturally contains fiber in addition to many other beneficial nutrients.
Your stool should be the consistency like toothpaste squeezing out of a tube. Mine is, albeit I go 2-3x a day , but I’ll take it!
