Remember that episode of Black Mirror in which the prime minister was blackmailed into fucking a pig? Starmerism is that with flags.
Hooray, Starmer can fuck off to doing dinner speeches, and then after a few years of Reform breaking the economy and society in unfathomable ways we may finally get a different stuffed suit in charge of Labour.
Yea thanks to the anti-immigrant grumbling that’s been riled up in the gammon horde I’m pretty sure Reform are going to get in next time and kill any government services that Labour hasn’t by the end of their term. But I’m hopeful said horde will regret their actions like the MAGA turds are starting to in the US once Nige’ straight up abandons them like we know he will. Then maybe the Russian Facebook bots will start telling them to do something vaguely useful and we get Corbyn who might be able to get things back into a somewhat serviceable state if it’s not too fucked at that point.
I remember when we elected a prime minister had literally fucked a (dead) pig, David, Cameron.
For a brief self-gaslighting moment, I tricked myself into thinking the plan was to get any unpopular but (for whatever reason) necessary policies out of the way at the start so people hopefully forget about them by the next election.
I think we’re well past that point now, and we need some pretty radical policy to combat the economic disaster we’re hurtling towards.
It’s not just economic. Its a road towards societal disaster. We’ve been on it a long time but has accelerated of late. All of the post-war social democratic values have been abandoned and replaced with paranoid protection of the rich and powerful.
My only hope is that he throws in something like proportional representation right at the end, but that’s an awfully long shot - and I could see Reform winning either way.
No way that’ll happen.
I’m ootl what has labour done since getting into power?
Basically, though they’re traditionally considered to be left wing, and people were expecting them to be slightly-right-wing, they’ve enacted all the Tory (very right wing) policies that were in the pipeline, and in an attempt to appeal to the far right, have jumped from “a little right of centre” into a government more right wing than David Cameron’s Tories were. They’re probably still to the left of where we’d be if we’d actually got Tories or UKIP.
For example (I have paraphrased and sensationalised the descriptions, because I am sad and angry):
- Starving the elderly and disabled
- Banning trans people from being allowed to use public toilets
- Implemented a ban on any website which could ever potentially contain a picture of a boob, or offer things like “quitting smoking support”, unless you upload your name/passport/3d scan of your face, postal address and email address to a dodgy company in Cypress or the USA
- Come out in complete support of a genocide
- Banned peace protesting and arrested hundreds of innocent people
- Come out in complete support of the other year’s Tory/UKIP rioting
- Come out in support of far-right nationalist flag-shagging
- Come out in support of killing refugees
- Various other atrocities. I’m sure you get the idea
I’ve used slightly loaded language and twisted a few specifics, but I’m sure you get the general idea.
slightly = extremely
a few = all
Campaign for Reform, from the looks of my area.
It was the most inevitable thing that’s ever been.
At least with the tories you knew what kind of scum you were getting. This spineless neo libral makes my skin crawl.
What’s liberal about what’s going on? It’s all authoritarians keeping the population under heel.
Neo-liberalism is free-market-at-all-costs ideology a la Reagan, Thatcher, Pinochet and chums.
Yes, liberalism.
Talk about new-speak.
New to you maybe, but this is old speak. The idea that liberalism means progress and tolerance is itself a recent ideological construct emerging from America’s right wing-ultra right wing political spectrum; like all ideas whose purpose is to justify capitalism, it is violently at odds with reality. Liberals are currently supporting a genocide here, and for the last couple hundred years most people around the world have correctly associated it with rapacious colonialism, imperial domination, and endless capitalist exploitation. Given that Orwell was a hack and a federal informant, and given that it’s good to learn to think for oneself, do you have anything of substance to say about this?
In addition to what others have said, neoliberalism more specifically has always been cruel, violent, and authoritarian since the beginning. Margaret Thatcher was not exactly a person who believed in peace, love, and togetherness.
Neoliberalism is an afront to liberalism. Please don’t conflate the two. It ignores anything to do with the rights of anybody except the ruling class.
Liberals believe that every person should be free to live their best life, and that includes freedom from oppression, poverty and other social disadvantages. Therefore it’s government’s role to lift those barriers. They also believe that government can be one of those oppressors and so favour regulating as little as possible, but also recognise the need for regulations when it stops the powerful exploiting the weak.
Neoliberals just believe that companies shouldn’t be subject the regulation. It’s greedy, and exploitative.
so when and where was this magic period of liberalism where it supported all those good things? when was it effective in curtailing the capitalists?
They mean neo-liberals.
This is Lemmy, where auth-left propaganda has twisted the word liberal into something else because they want to normalise authoritarianism. Just ignore them.
Liberalism was always about liberties for property owners and boot on the necks of everyone else.
