Whew. As a GenX, I didn’t have any of those either. In fact I’m quite sure my Silent Gen parents didn’t either. I don’t know anyone who managed to pay off their mortgage before age 40 or 45 and the passive income only came as retirement funds after age 65.
As the saying goes “I was once young and poor but after decades of hard work and perseverance I am no longer young”
I lived, I laughed, I ate avocado toast.
Nope, better have kids and irrationally foist those unrealistic ideals and hopes onto my child and fail to live vicariously through them instead.
Which sounds like it should be oddly specific, but might be one of the most common things humans ever do.
I mean, all she has to do is birth one of Musk’s “Legion” babies and she could tick all of those boxes!
In my 30s:
- can get a 50k mortgage with my salary but ok I rent a decent place
- dad’s old car works fine for me
- beaches are crowded shit holes but garden is lively and nice and wild.
- make just below average income at one of our countries best universities.
- 4 cats that are awesome, hobbies that are awesome, friends that are awesome, and I can smoke weed whenever I want nowadays.
Yeah the machine should still burn but at leasty I can be moderately happy without paying.
A 50k mortgage won’t buy a condemned house that has to be torn down these days.
But she seems to have a 5 figure passive income.
Move to another country and all but the Tesla is possible.
Teslas aren’t that expensive, so they could probably have that as well.
Worth less than scrap now
Now you’re talking affordable!
I’m not gonna lie I read this as I was heading to bed and it kind of ruined my mood not because of anyones fault but because it’s true. what the fuck do we work for ?
To further enrich the ones who are already rich. I’m sure it will trickle down any minute now.
Exactly, we push the money ball up hill so rich people can dam it off and let some trickle down.
Remember when we could afford eggs.
In my 40s:
- Bought a home last year, still not paid off.
- home isn’t far from the beach but, due to the previous tsunamis, there’s not much to do there near where I live.
- make more than 6 figures (but not in USD and not 6 figures in USD after conversion).
- I am the chef. And the gardener.
- Fuck tesla (I have a kei car (going somewhere with wife or buying farm supplies), motorcycle, and pedal-assist ebikes)
Almost through my 40’s and I’ve:
- Had three decent careers that each abruptly laid me off without warning.
- Had a home and lost it.
- Had a car and lost it.
- Had parents and siblings and lost them
- Had health and lost it.
- Had good credit and lost it.
- Had tens of thousands in savings and spent it on family members with cancer. (They died anyway.)
- Had a drinking problem and lost it, so hey score one!
Yeah, I got laid off multiple times, lived out of my car, and have a bunch of health problems. The drinking problems also came because of the former (and mental healthcare in the US) and caused/worsened some of the former. Hang in there!
In my 30s:
- a broken e-bike
- debt
- almost 2€ on my bank account
- a burnout
Nobody, not even me, want’s my wildest dreams to become true. Moderate dreams - Now we’re talking!
I’d take the smaller dreams at this point.
What about nightmares?
Seems like that’s where we are headed
Headed? I’m already there.
I know it’s just a joke but lady works for Apple, I have a hard time believing she has none of this things
Product Owner is like a project manager.
I’d put her in the 100-200k range.
Working for Apple, potentially near Apple HQ.
You could live paycheck to paycheck on that. No shit.
Or you could live within your means in a low cost of living area. I know a software PM in rural Appalachia.
edit: I guess the caveat is that I dont know Apple’s remote-work stance. It is certainly feasible at other aoftware companies
I’m saying I could live comfortably in most places with my salary BUT having a family does dictate that some of my decisions place me grasping above my income bracket.
I’m “poor” in my area on 6figures because I chose to be close to good schools.
I chose to be taxed more for better stuffs.
Do you think everyone who works at Apple is wealthy?
Why are you assuming everyone who works for Apple is making bank?
Besides, the only realistic way to achieve any of those things, beside the Tesla, is to have a rich family. Even on a six figure salary.
Besides the Tesla, none of these are easily achievable by a non-executive working at Apple at age 33.
P R I O R I T I E S
Most of that list is attainable if you make good money like that person likely does… and choose to prioritize those things.
Paid off home, and car, and servants, in your early thirties?
Not really, no. Not unless you somehow made six figures from age 20 30
You can if you pick one, assuming you have a six figure income, you just have to live like you have a mid-five figure income. $50k+/year is a lot of money to throw at house/car/servant.
Thats just what I did. I was fortunate to have a well paying career for a while and I prioritized getting free from debt. Now I have time to be my own chef. Took almost 20 years. Not that complicated. No servants tho, thats just you being salty. I never had a rich family, which you assume is the only way. I grew up in poverty. My good luck came from elsewhwere.
So, you started making your fortune at thirteen?
Keep being salty. Im older than you seem to assume, but I did have summer jobs when I was 13. And no, hate alll you like, but I dont have a fortune, just a place to live. I have two shitty part-time jobs now. Be jealous of my shit wages, I guess.
Keep being salty.
No, you just can’t read. The original post was talking about having all these things by 33. You saying it’s doable over 20 years is completely missing the point. Plus the other commenter’s math is 33yo - 20 years of work (claimed by you) = starting career at 13 years old.
At this point you’re either being purposely obtuse or you’re a complete idiot. Either way: shut the fuck up
Nah, youre not my supervisor. I get that you hate me for having been successful. It is typical. Keep downvoting, Ill keep living my best life. And actually, I did it in less than 20 years of income… More like 15 of actual work punctuated by periods layoffs and disability. I still made it happen though. So keep hating. 😘
Is that title font you used available in the latest update because I only have bold, italic, autos delete S and two tepees with a fireman climbing up and down, respectively?
All I did was use CAPS and spaces. My client doesnt show it in a different font. I am using the latest Thunder client. I will check tesseract later.
Street pharmacist could give you those things
On a related note, if I become super rich, one of the first things I’ll do is not buy a bigger house or a fancy car. I’ll hire a personal chef to cook healthy, delicious meals. Not having to cook everyday is a big luxury.
My parents, who are in their sixties have…one of those? Which is actually pretty good. Dream small, friends!
Check out moneybags over here, being able to secure a mortgage.
