The Hong Kong High Court’s conviction of Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily, is the latest marker of Hong Kong’s dramatic shift from respecting press freedoms to endorsing outright hostility toward the media

Why exactly is it bogus? He’s smack-dab in the middle of the conflict between old-HK and China. From a Chinese perspective, I can see very well how he’s a national security risk because of his communication with conflicting US interests.
It’s not his fault that the political landscape shifted on him making his activities now illegal, but the charges aren’t bogus.
The Chinese national security law is bogus for many reasons. A general but incomplete list is here: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2020/07/hong-kong-national-security-law-10-things-you-need-to-know/
If it’s a bogus law, the charges are bogus. Cultural relativity is not an excuse for arbitrary authoritarian oppression.
In addition to the other reasons others have pointed out why your position is bullshit, imagine actually defending an ex-post-facto law.
Political imprisonment is always bogus.
