Once upon a time, there was a site called StumbleUpon which was a glorified search engine, except you basically only picked a category/topic and their service would redirect you to some random page on the net that was under the category.

The site went down eventually and they took off their extension. They eventually turned into Mix, but now you can actually still find StumbleUpon out there. They’ve closed off their actual capability for some reason.

The closest thing we have now maybe that doesn’t exactly match but for giggles, is the useless web:

Dotlink — just someone’s personal page with a peculiar design.

It seems to be partly inspired by r/Ooer (you need to have custom subreddit css allowed on this link, or open it in an incognito tab).

I mean, I still consider this page cool. It seems to have originated in 2016, and IMO it’s not quite the 90s ‘dancing baby’ design or Myspace, but instead has a definite whiff of Tumblr art circa early-mid 2010s. I liked psychedelic-ish Tumblr art, it gave a whimsical perspective on life.

Thanks! I discovered you don’t need to build a transformer to be openai compatible. This operates more as a slot machine so I didn’t waste energy training a model to be a duck and its more lightweight. There’s 70ish possible responses with varying rarities and just a simple rule not to repeat the same one twice. If you use the website or API there is a slight chance your “data” will be captured by your ISP or HF, but it’s open source and super lightweight so you can run it locally. If you are super security minded you might notice there are 3 things obfuscated in the source code. They are just fun Easter eggs obfuscated like a spoiler tag, but it’s just base64 so you can easily audit to verify my claim that it’s humor not vulnerability.

Damn, Zombocom. I remember taking a Photoshop class in highschool, probably 2004 or so, and we were able to sync up all like 35 computers to play Zombocom at the same time. It was a really wonderful thing to hear, Zombocom in 70.0, crappy computer speaker quality.

The thing that people wouldn’t get today is that zombocom was a spoof site of other stuff that was out there that was actually kind of like this. People - usually someone trying to ride the emerging .com wave - would barf up these incomplete early web sites with promises that absolutely would never be delivered.
