Trump administration officials are suggesting their immigration crackdown could expand to include deporting convicted U.S. citizens and charging anyone — not just immigrants — who criticizes Trump’s policies. Here are 3 tactics the administration has teased that legal analysts say would challenge Americans’ rights:

  1. Sending convicted U.S. citizens to prisons abroad.

  2. Putting critics of the administration’s policies in jeopardy.

  3. Questioning the authority of court orders.

Two bullet points toward the end of the article:

    • Trump’s handling of immigration polls well in public surveys.
    • But sending immigrants to El Salvador’s prison without criminal convictions or due process does not — about 60% were opposed in a recent YouGov survey.

The only conclusion is that the first group has absolutely no idea what’s happening. That, or the “surveys” were those bad faith, heavily tilted surveys that my Republican House rep would send out:

republicants rely on–and absolutely require–an uninformed, and mis-informed public… and that, for the most part, is what we have currently.

It’s very obvious that the first group has bought into the Conservative lie that most immigrants are criminals, “stealing our jobs” – except the ones they know personally, of course, who came here “the right way” and are “one of the good ones”. While this lie originated in the Right, there are a lot of people in this country of all political leanings who believe it.

My counter for “they took our jerbz!” is “No one stole your job from you. Your boss gave it away.” It’s been surprisingly effective even in my very red state. Unfortunately, it seems to be a one-off as it only shuts them up and doesn’t seem to affect anything beyond that.

Still, it shuts them up (even if it’s more like hitting the snooze button lol).

        Edit/Addition:

        Sample Conversation

Them: Rabble rabble, immigrants taking jobs from real Americans.

Me: (Express concern) Has that happened to you or someone you know?

(This could go either way, but my response is basically the same)

Them: Well, not me, but my [friend of a friend’s brother’s step dad] lost his job to some DEI immigrant.

Them (alternate): No, but you know it happens.

Me: Did an immigrant come up to you/them with a gun and demand that you give them your job?

        Them: …well, no, but…

Me: Then the immigrant did not steal your job - your boss gave it away to them because they thought it would save the company money.

        Adapt as necessary.

South Park gave you the solution years ago (season 8, ep.7). If they want to make the immigrants who “took their jerbz” away, thet should go out and have a lot of gay sex. /s

My sense is that most Americans just dismiss this stuff as political nonsense and don’t pay attention to it. They don’t realize how many people, including them, might be affected in the future.
