Been seeing a lot of posts using avif for file formats. Am I just doing my old man shaking his fist at the sky routine or can we go back to using easier to share formats?
Agreed we should be using Jpeg XL :P
AVIF is the best quality to size format available that’s not WEBP or PNG. it’s supported by most platforms and an open standard.
Jpeg-xl support isn’t ubiquitous enough to use in production.
If it’s the best available that’s not PNG, why not just use PNG?
What I was trying to say was PNG is worse for quality to compression ratios.
Ah, thanks for clarifying for me! (I’m pretty much format-agnostic, so it was an honest query.)
Every time I see posts like this I wonder what devices or software you guys are using that don’t support these newer formats? Because I have never had any issues opening or sharing any of these formats in any way on any device. The format is backed by Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, among others. That doesn’t leave much out.
Old hardware and outdated software?
