Predator: Badlands 3.5/5: Man, I was really excited for this. I love the new Predator movies (Prey/Killer of Killers) but this is a pretty different direction, it’s a buddy comedy. I like Predators being terrifying monsters, I didn’t like this one kind of bumbling around, even if it did end up being particularly effective by the end. It’s very clearly influenced by modern Star Wars which is not a compliment
Falling Down 2.5/5: I thought this was going to be more about a guy’s day getting progressively shittier until he cracks. Instead it’s about a guy progressively losing his shit which is way less fun today than I assume it was back in the early 90s, considering how that is just a daily news story
Good Fortune 2.5/5: This feels like its written by dudes who have been successful comedy writers for too long who have lost touch with current struggles, presumably because it is. There’s some good jokes, a few funny bits, and one of the most obvious Chekov’s Guns I’ve ever seen in a movie
The Big Lebowski 4.5/5: Hit shuffle on Sunday and we’ll Dude… tomorrow was already the 10th. Great movie
Eternity 4/5: Mystery movie Monday. This was really cool. The premise is interesting, there’s some funny gags, and these are some of the most dynamic characters I’ve seen in a movie in a while. Almost every main character goes through a journey where your opinion changes on them and for being just under 2 hours the run time is effectively used
The Mask 3/5: Wow, this is so much hornier than I remembered from my youth. It’s Who Framed Roger Rabit but hornier, less funny, better dance numbers, and worse written. Mixed bag, but not as offensive as I expected
My main issue with the predator movie was that basically any 'warlike sci-fi race" character could have been the lead. This movie would have played the exact same if the main character had been a klingon. The new weapons are decidedly too showy for a race of stealth predators, and I wonder how long they spent making the bow before realizing it was a completely worthless addition.
