    That’s not even true. The reason for the second amendment is clearly spelled out in the amendment itself. The part that everyone seems to ignore.

    A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State…

    It was intended as a way for us to have an army available on sort notice without having to maintain a standing army.

      Thank you. Finally another person saying this. I try to point this out any time this lie is spread, but it’s so common now most people assume it’s true. They do t even bother reading it and trying to interpret it for themselves. It’s really clear, even today. Given the context of the time, it’s even more clear. Standing armies weren’t common, and the new nation was poor and definitely didn’t expect to be able to have one. It relied on militias for defence.

        And there was the whole states vs federal thing going on. They didn’t want the Federal gov’t to have a standing military for reasons. They gave up on that pretty quickly, too bad they didn’t go back and clarify their stance, but how would they know their offspring would be so fucking stupid.
