Europe has in general very strict limits and rules on donations to political parties. Political campaigns also have restrictions and limits you won’t see in the US. So buying politicians is really not that easy as it is in the US.
And no, I don’t think that Putin and Trump rises to power were in order to make the unification of Europe possible…
Also European countries can pull out of the union fairly freely, and your taxes are paid to the country and the country then pays to EU (right?).
So you have the freedom to defund the EU if it gets corrupt. The US pays taxes first to the fed and then states. And no chance in hell a state can withdraw
It started differently. The federal government of the US originally only collected tariffs. US history shows what is going to come for Europe.
The Euro can’t be stable under current conditions. A unified EU budget is the only way to stabilize the inevitably stumbling economies. It’s just a matter of time. Like other things, the citizens will be surprised but will accept the necessary reform to end the crisis. They won’t stage a rebellion when people point out that the crisis was constructed. Instead they are ready to walk into the next one for the next change.
That’s one of the bright sides of Brexit, the story of the EU being a prison doesn’t add up. Nevertheless Viktor Orban tries to use that card, comparing the EU to USSR. But no one is stopping him, the door is wide open. Would be much faster to manage than Brexit as there is a precedent to guide the process…
Not necessarily. Don’t know if the Hungarian law requires it, but the process of exiting is simply started by the government. Theresa May did it (and by the way, the law in Britain did not require her to do it as the referendum was not legally binding).
They have been and are regulating lobbygroups as well. Afaik corruption does happen, but it’s rare.
Add: Just found it. Since sept 2025 we have this EU Transparency Register.
The Transparency register is a database listing ‘interest representatives’ (organisations, associations, groups and self-employed individuals) who carry out activities to influence the EU policy and decision-making process.

Like the strict rules for von der Leyen to keep her Pfizer messages? EU newspapers could be so involved that we just don’t know.
Various newspapers across 27 countries?
Which newspaper keeps pushing for answers?
It’s not just various but almost all newspapers that don’t push.

“No one is stopping him”
Well, he DOES have to get Hungarians to vote for it…
(Leaving the EU requires a referendum, right?)

Oh.
Still, he’d hopefully at least have a bad time trying, right?

Corruption will always happen in any country, how you fight it and prevent it is what distinguishes countries.
Exactly
Examples Qatar scandal, Huawei scandal etc
Examining enemies and competitors is easy. Von der Leyen could delete her Pfizer messages. Selective enforcement is not a good sign.
