Years ago, in the 90s, I had a client who would take an annual solo backpacking trip through Mexico. He would visit small villages, and ask if they knew of any Mayan ruins in the nearby jungles.

He said that every village knew of ruins where kids had been playing for generations, but had never been visited by scholars. Someone would take him there, and he would be the first white person to have seen these ruins since they were built. They were EVERYWHERE, and none of them had ever been “discovered” or studied by scholars.

I asked him if he ever felt in danger, and he said he never did, everybody was always friendly, and happy to show him their local ruins.
