More colleges are looking at emergency housing solutions, including have students sleeping in alumni’s homes, napping pods, Airbnbs and even an assisted living facility.
Good. It’s terrible that this is a reality, but what is happening here is the decriminalization of being homeless and a student. Sure, you have to have a car, which isn’t great, but for those in this situation that need this service, I imagine it to be a comfort.
What this also does is make a very public safe space for people in dire conditions to congregate, commiserate, and hopefully organize. Please make a tent city; nothing will help illustrate the problem more. Create a safe place for unhoused people and see just how many show up.
A safe space for anyone to help meet their basic needs should always be a good thing.
A friend of mine used to live in his car, and he told me the worst part was getting chased away all the time. This would remove some stress from a very stressful situation.
