Meh, I saw the first one and it bored me. I saw the second one and it bored me so much that I stopped half way. I really could never get what people find so great about this franchise.
yeah like you I guess I’m one of the few people that just can’t get into them. I’m not saying they’re bad movies, I’m sure they’re good. The first one didn’t interest me and I didn’t bother with the second. I guess I just couldn’t see what everyone else sees in them.
I didn’t watch the second one. The first one was real pretty, but I couldn’t get over how transparently the story was just copying Pocahontas.
Most art is inspired by other art but most good artists have the presence of mind to at least obfuscate it a little bit.
“iT’s JuSt PoCaHoNtAs!”
Yeah… it was. Like, beat for beat almost exactly. I don’t get your point.
Of course you don’t get my point.
But is it good?
The internet assholes have already decided it sucks. It’s ok to ignore them.
I don’t give a shit about the negativity internet idiots. They’re surely on the way to shit on this article very shortly.
The last two movies were fucking phenomenal and reminded me of going to the movies as a child. I welcome the spectacle and the new experience.
I welcome the spectacle and the new experience.
ok, but get this, what if the spectacle and experience also told a story instead of just being a pile of colours and shapes?
OMG I agree with you so much, I am so excited to see the next movie. The only two movies I will have seen in the theater this year are the Wicked Sequel and soon this one.
Dude’s wasting his potential on one intellectual property for the remainder of his life.
First one? Cool. Second one? Alright. More? Nah dawg.
I regretted missing Bugonia on the big screen, I’ll be waiting for this. Hopefully they advance the plot more cause the second one felt like a filler.
I’m sure they’re pretty, I just don’t care.
I may have been too old to see Avatar (the first one), but I just couldn’t help thinking it was just a new version of Pocahontas. Sure, it was pretty, but I care about stories and I didn’t really get one. Not an original one anyway.
James Cameron isn’t really a storyteller, though. He pushes technological marvels in his films. He cares if it looks good.
I saw a bit of the second one the other day, the one about water. It looked awesome. Really should give it a chance one day. It might be cool to see the third one in theaters. Or maybe even IMAX. I don’t expect the story to make me think much, but like Nicole Kidman says in the AMC ad, you’re there to be transported to another world for a couple hours, and James Cameron is absolutely good for that.
I just couldn’t help thinking it was just a new version of Pocahontas.
Literally every movie is just a new version of X.
There are only a couple dozen stories. At all. They’re all remixed and reimagined versions of something that’s already been done.
Even Pocahontas, I’m sure is just a version of some ancient Greek story we’ve never heard of.This line was a meme then and it’s a meme now.
People repeating it instantly clue me in that they have never decided to accept something for what it is instead of what they wish it to be. They’re not worth your energy.

1984 The Terminator
1986 Aliens
1989 The Abyss
1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day
1994 True Lies
1997 TitanicI think the majority of these films had story aspects that captured people’s imaginations and made an impact on popular culture, not just because of the special effects.
It might be because of the writers and people outside of Cameron, but the films were good from a story perspective.
This insinuates that the story is bad. It’s not.
The story fits the theme and fits the spectacle and that is what I want from these movies.
It’s just not a spy noir thriller sex crime novel with Shakespearean language and that’s ok.
They are worth watching just for the spectacle. But you’re right, the storytelling is just an afterthought.
He’s not right. The story fits the theme and the spectacle.
But the story is crap.
Avatar’s story is better than the last two Christopher Nolan movies.
Avatar’s story is orders of magnitude more entertaining than Scorseses last three movies.
Lol. No, it’s not but feel free to be negative with someone else. I’m sure it’s very healthy.
…but I just couldn’t help thinking it was just a new version of Pocahontas.
Sure you did. Or maybe you are just parroting the same silly shit people have said about Avatar on movie message boards for years.
How about pointing out that is has no cultural impact…
James Cameron isnt really a story teller.
That is completely false. He is an excellent story teller.
I’m glad someone else sees this silly shit and calls it what it is.
I wait every time Avatar is mentioned to chuckle derisively at the fool that writes it out. They usually have zero idea how it makes them look.
Yeah, sure, great.
