Such a massive number that you could add several zeros to it and not notice the difference.

Like the ridiculous subscription mouse a few months back, I’d be willing to bite with the right incentives, but those aren’t incentives the manufacturer is going to be OK with. I’d take a car with ads, so long as it was sufficiently discounted compared to a normal car. And then I’d look up how to disable the ads.
Same but with my mom. When the labels of several of the buttons have worn off from repeated use over years, and she can’t figure out why the screen is blue because she’s accidentally changed it to the wrong input. And all she would tell me before ten minutes of detailed questioning as far as what the issue was is “it’s not working”, I had to get from “not working” to “on the wrong input” over the phone. And when the first thing I asked was “what’s on the screen?” and she answered “nothing.”

I guess that could be the specific dystopia we’re aiming for. It’s a hell of a race to beat the other dystopias/apocalypses there though. But what else would you expect from a type 13 planet in it’s final stage?
I don’t think this is the kind of neuroplasticity we’re supposed to be aiming for.
Blocklist is literally empty.
They federate with everyone, including the insufferable right wingers, the insufferable tankies, and the people who draw loli (I think there’s only one lemmy instance still active that allows loli and it’s the radqueer one, and it’s tiny enough you don’t notice it unless you go looking for it). Most of the insufferable right wingers have also closed their respective instances.
If their mastodon instance is any comparison, it still federate with everyone including the instances that post loli. I suspect if an instance were posting stuff illegal in the US that would be grounds for SDF to defederate for legal reasons, but 1A protections are broader than speech protections in most of the rest of the world.
You can always block the community or even the entire instance of anyone you don’t want to see.
Or one with the broadest possible federation like lemmy.sdf.org, though they are US based if that’s a problem for you.
SDF does not defederate. The blocklist is empty. And it’s small enough and chill enough that it’s unlikely to get blocked by other instances much.
They’re a non-profit that’s older than the web and offers a variety of network and retrocomputing services including most famously a public access Unix server. They started as a dialup anime BBS.
I’ve never had that problem. Not on my instance’s web page or using Sync on my phone.
Yeah, but the interpreter is pretty universal, if sometimes buggy.
No one cares about your unique social characteristics or what demographics you fall into.
Of course they do, they make great lines to create schisms to prevent people from really grasping the rest of what you wrote.
Using computers with closed source biology. Classic.
Hey now, biology is pretty definitively open source. Every generation produces small patches of varying quality (mutations) and for most organisms the source is freely distributed to create new builds (reproduction). I mean if no one is downloading your genetic repo that’s largely a you problem (natural selection) not a biology problem.
let us jack off to the weird shit we want to jack off too
That’s been grounds for defederating some Lemmy instances in the past.
(Ignore the name, they mean anti-neozionists and are willing to shame Jews who protest against Israels actions as well, they even have a tag for them)
An ideology declaring itself to be the representation of a demographic and accusing members of that demographic who don’t believe what they are supposed to (aka in line with the ideology) of hating themselves?
What do they call it, internalized antisemitism?
Basically every other ideology that considers itself to be representing some demographic does basically the same thing.
Trump/Musk (they’re joined at the hip AFAIC, except Trump is definately the bottom, despite his diaper issues)
Didn’t Musk’s son tell Trump he wasn’t the real president? You know the one who started showing up publicly right after the Luigi thing, who we should probably just nickname Kevlar?
Now I’m hearing that they are banning people for UPVOTES!
Only upvotes involving Mario’s brother, so far. Presumably the “issue” being that he has too much support and the time between posting and it being moderated away it’s getting enough votes to still have significant visibility which is what they’re trying to avoid.
The great part about federation is that there isn’t a central control, and so they can in fact have their own instances, and either your instance can block their instance or you as a user can block their instance and you never have to see them or deal with them.
When it comes to controversial subs, the general rule is if you have really dedicated mods who are super careful to never break a rule themselves you can generally keep it up.
Those mods not breaking any rules individually is important because otherwise the admins will invoke their backup plan for dealing with a sub they don’t like but isn’t breaking any rules - keeping the mods under a microscope and looking for any excuse to ban them and immediately ban the sub for being unmoderated, refuse to give it to new mods, and ban any replacement sub for recreating a banned sub.
They could just ban the sub because they don’t like it, but that kind of seeming capriciousness tends to get a bad reaction from the userbase, which is why they look for an excuse to justify the ban.
Nothing is convincing.
“The GOP controls all three branches of government. Whatever the situation looks like next election, whether it’s good or bad, it’s entirely the fault of the GOP.”
A third party win won’t happen overnight. The only way you can realistically get it is with ranked choice voting. Otherwise you’re stuck replacing Democrats (and why not, Republicans — in smaller races you can absolutely run a Bernie style progressive who keeps the focus on economics!) one by one because the institutions are already in place, and they’re really powerful! Also, remember they’re just institutions: parties don’t have ideologies, people do.
You’ve basically got three options:
I saw the “and there’s no filing for bankruptcy on this one” at the end and all I could think is that even if you thought running a country like a business was a good idea (it’s not) why would you pick a businessman who’s filed for bankruptcy quite a lot to be the one to do so? I feel like he needs to ask himself that.
