Lava in Hawaii, seismic shaking in Alaska and underwater rumblings near Oregon. Scientists say it’s not the end of the world, but it’s definitely worth watching.

So is all this activity a sign of a looming geological catastrophe?

Not at all, says meteorologist Jonathan Belles.

Betteridge’s law of headlines strikes again.

Another happy symptom of global warming. Hang onto your hats, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

How are volcanoes a symptom of global warming? I’ve never heard this take before

          TIL.

It’s not the cause like OP said, but I’ve never considered the effect deglaciation or changing precipitation has on volcanism.

Thanks for the good read! I was into volcanology a lot as a kid, but climate change wasn’t on my radar back then, so this is all new info to me. I always forget how closely interlinked hydrology can be to volcanology.

You should check out the link that OP posted in reply to me, it was clarifying. It’s not that far fetched of an idea when you consider the impact of deglaciation and changes in the location and amount of water relative to hot spots.

My theory is that the earths crust is a barrier between us and the magma below. The driving force of this is the temperature of the crust and so as it rises, the barrier will be compromised. Just a theory, not based in fact or knowledge. One thing I know for sure is that collectively we have very little knowledge about what global warming will unleash.
