What you’re calling Proton is mostly Wine which was developed by countless people unaffiliated with Valve and funded primarily by Codeweavers over past couple of decades.
There’s no lesser evil here, Valve is out there to make money by any means necessary, including marketing online gambling to children. Which is also why feature like this will never be implemented in Steam - they have a monopoly so why would they make it easier for others.
It would be whataboutism if I changed subjects but I’m pointing out both companies are quite similar when it comes to distributing proprietary software, openwashing and relying vendor lock-in.
I don’t have the energy or the inclination to educate bad faith agents on the internet. Mentioning Valve when I Iiterally only mentioned Linux and MS is whataboutism.
That there is the main reason I left reddit. Go find some windmills to fight.
Meanwhile, anyone reading this would be smart not to fall for MS’s bootleg low effort gaming software ads and steer clear from anything that parasitic monolith produces. One never knows when the OS you use for gaming is used to guide bombs to your building.

You do get your games through Steam, don’t you? It’s a fairly safe assumption given that you stated you play on Linux. Valve monopoly there is even stronger than on Windows.
Gaming spaces are full of pointless negativity these days so my „whataboutism” was meant to showcase that much of it is rooted in tribalism, serves no other purpose than to feel good about yourself and it can cut both ways.
That there is the main reason I left reddit. Go find some windmills to fight.
There’s plenty of gaming communities in the Fediverse to pick from, you won’t find me in other ones.
The lesser of two evils. Call me when MS makes a better compatibility layer than proton.
Love the whataboutism tho, when that’s the last line of defense one knows MS is truly indefensible…
edit: spelling

Like I said, whataboutism.
