Tuta is a end-to-end-encryption mail and calendar provider. They recently wrote a good blog-post about changing to european services.

Even Gmail allows to use the email client of your choice, going for an email provider that force you to use their app is a bummer

I really dislike Tuta for their refusal to support SMTP/IMAP and PGP, let alone CalDAV or CardDAV. Posteo’s approach is way better.

        Web apps.

For reference I work for a competing mail provider and the majority of our users don’t use SMTP or IMAP, instead exclusively using the web app.

Using Thunderbird as opposed to tuta’s quite barebones client:

          • delayed messaging
          • message scheduling
          • local backup of mails
          • no email import
          • desktop app failures (happens quite often to me that I just can’t log in)

Not to mention other external QoL functionalities like a home assistant tablet being able to display a family calendar and being able to automate based off of events

Tuta’s discount is tempting, but I’ve also seen StartMail doing 50% off lately. Definitely feels like a good time to test a couple out, especially if you care more about UX than just encryption.

Sadly, no calendar on startmail which is a non-starter for getting my family on it.

Seems to be nothing really with mail + calendar + encryption + IMAP from a smaller company.

Posteo has no custom domain support, deal breaker for me. As far as I understand they don’t support IMAP in order to keep their encryption working, and I believe others like Proton do the same thing. Since their webapp is good and they even have an official client on Fdroid, I don’t think it’s a big deal

Tuta kept giving me ads despite being a premium user and when I finally decided to leave they made it impossible to cancel. I had to delete my account to get out of the bind.

It’s fun to see how people rage over corporations who sell their data and let people use their products for free. And when you want to use more private products, they complain about how they need to pay for it.

I have been using Tuta for a couple of years now, when I decided to not use Google anymore and I think Tuta is worth the money.

You need to use Tuta’s application because they can’t provide their security with a other applications.

You probably don’t need that legendary plan though. You can get the regular plan for the same price later, it offers more than enough for a regular user. As of now, try it for free. Fuck FOMO.

What SSO are you expecting? Google? Microsoft? GitHub? You see the problem here?

The missing passkey is certainly something they can work on but this is definitely not a critical feature

Sigh, I have just one problem with Tuta - why such a stupid, stupid name?! I can already imagine myself on the phone saying “yes, T. U. T. A. Tuta dot com”

Yes? It’s not uncommon to see discounts stick for the life of the sub. It locks people in because they don’t want to lose that sweet deal, sometimes even if there’s a cheaper/more appropriate package elsewhere.
