Another round of immigration judges received an email on Friday informing them they are being let go, NPR has learned, adding to the growing list of immigration court personnel cut by Trump amid his efforts to speed up deportations of immigrants without legal status.

15 immigration judges learned that they would be put on leave and that their employment would terminate on July 22, according to two people familiar with the firings and a confirmation from the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), a union that represents immigration judges. The two people spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Looking on from the outside, every piece of news sounds like “the avalanche has gathered more debris and more speed and causes even more devastation”. It’s horrible. Never in my lifetime have I watched the implosion of a democracy in real time. Looking at Germany in the 1930s must have felt similar.

This is undeniably true. If democracy were still here, the news would have been more judges brought on to speed up process. But removing judges to speed things up? That absolutely means they are not following the law and removing impediments.

So I know this is going to be a dumb question under fascism times but I still have to ask:

How exactly are judges, who are under the judicial branch, being fired by the president of the executive branch?

Immigration judges aren’t judicial judges, they are what are called administrative judges and do fall under the executive branch. That said, there is a lot of administrative law and procedure that is certainly still getting fucked by Trump/maga.

In other words: the breaking points were already built in before Trump came to power. Frankly it’s a miracle it took so long for someone to just take full advantage of all of them at once.

All of Trump’s appointments and hires have been based on compliance, and nothing else. Well, actually, competence may be a negative and honesty is completely unacceptable.
