It will never happen. There is no canadian will to be a future member of an united European country. The Canadians will never ever be pro EU if they understand that they lose power in some topics.
I’d be pro EU as a Canadian but a lot would depend on how well the decades leading up to it went. The process of regulatory harmonization could be a huge challenge with many possible deal breakers.
I think Schengen membership is a good near term goal, though. Achievable. Then we see how it looks from there.
Unfortunately, you are USA lite when we compare your regulations and ours. This change needs time (experience ~15yrs) for the companies to adopt while not getting bankrupt, because of all the investments they have to do comply. Then you will publically announce that the Euro will become your currency in the future. Bulgaria joined the Eurozone and it backfired, because of “losing our national identity and sovereignty” and their Lev was already pegged to the Euro. You are not Denmark, that means you will not get the benefits they have. -> Economy and the society do not want it and of course our US friends will pay the separatists to use this and become “independent”.
